Important Questions for CBSE Class 9 English Gulliver’s Travels

Upset with the unauthorized changes to the early editions, Swift wanted to correct and perhaps revise his work, but to do so he needed to track down various manuscripts and printed copies. Not surprisingly, then, Gulliver continues to vex. Further, the textual history of this individual work sheds light on broader issues involving political censorship and the nature of publishing in eighteenth-century England. While satirists such as Swift wanted to publish correct and complete versions of their works, booksellers faced intense pressures from the authorities. To avoid prosecution, some kind of compromise was often necessary, whether on the part of the author, the bookseller, or both.

A keystone of English literature , it was one of the books that gave birth to the novel form, though it did not yet have the rules of the genre as an organizing tool. The book is written in the first person from the point of view of Lemuel Gulliver, a surgeon and sea captain who visits remote regions of the world, and it describes four adventures. In the first one, Gulliver is the only survivor of a shipwreck, and he swims to Lilliput, where he is tied up by people who are less than 6 inches 15 cm tall. He is then taken to the capital city and eventually released. The Lilliputians indulge in ridiculous customs and petty debates. Political affiliations, for example, are divided between men who wear high-heeled shoes symbolic of the English Tories and those who wear low ones representing the English Whigs , and court positions are filled by those who are best at rope dancing.

The novel begins with Lemuel Gulliver recounting the story of his life, beginning with his family history. He is born to a family in Nottinghamshire, the third of five sons. There, under a man named James Bates, he learns mathematics and navigation with the hope of traveling. When his apprenticeship ends, he studies physics at Leyden. He then becomes a surgeon aboard a ship called the Swallow for three years.
