Pneumatic systems have many advantages, such as simplicity, reliability, low-cost, long life, etc. In this contribution, I propose a nonlinear robust tracking control strategy to solve the tracking problem of the servo pneumatic positioning system. The approach is novel in the sense that it takes into account the nonlinearities inherent to pneumatic servo positioning systems and considers position, velocity and pressure differences in the chambers of the pneumatic cylinder as feedback states. The suggested control strategy is implemented in simulation and on the real system.

Two recent developments reported in the literature, namely i the application of pulse-width modulation techniques to on-off pneumatic valves and ii the introduction of a high speed rotary air valve, are merged in the design of a novel rotary flow control valve with built-in pulse-width modulation.

In this article, we present the design, modeling, and evaluation of a class of soft fabric-based pneumatic actuators SFPAs for soft wearable assistive gloves that can simultaneously assist the thumb abduction and finger flexion and extension motions for brachial plexus injury patients. We further develop a mathematical model to evaluate the influence of the geometric parameters on the blocked tip forces of the finger-flexion SFPAs and extension torques of the finger-extension SFPAs, which are also verified by the experimental results. We then integrate our SFPAs into a soft wearable assistive glove with a portable control system. The glove is finally tested on a healthy volunteer and a brachial plexus injury patient.
