Metacreation: Art and Artificial Life

Joseph T. P , Mexico City , Mexico e-mail: cgg unam. For millennia people have wondered what makes the living different from the non-living. Beginning in the mids, artificial life has studied living systems using a synthetic approach: build life in order to understand it better, be it by means of software, hardware, or wetware. This review provides a summary of the advances that led to the development of artificial life, its current research topics, and open problems and opportunities. We classify artificial life research into 14 themes: origins of life, autonomy, self-organization, adaptation including evolution, development, and learning , ecology, artificial societies, behavior, computational biology, artificial chemistries, information, living technology, art, and philosophy. Being interdisciplinary, artificial life seems to be losing its boundaries and merging with other fields.

The Journal provides a distinctive forum for anyone interested in artistic research and practised-based research. JSTA is indexed by Scopus. We present a new media work, MediaScape, which is an initial foray into a fully interdisciplinary metacreativity. Lastly, we describe MediaScape in detail, and present some future directions. Artificial life, or a-life, is an interdisciplinary science focused on artificial systems that mimic the properties of living systems. In the s, new media artists began appropriating and adapting the techniques of a-life science to create a-life art; Mitchell Whitelaw's Metacreation is the first detailed critical account of this new field of creative practice. MediaScape: Towards a Video, Music, and Sound Metacreation

Evolutionary art is a branch of generative art , in which the artist does not do the work of constructing the artwork, but rather lets a system do the construction. In evolutionary art, initially generated art is put through an iterated process of selection and modification to arrive at a final product, where it is the artist who is the selective agent. Evolutionary art is to be distinguished from BioArt , which uses living organisms as the material medium instead of paint, stone, metal, etc. In common with biological evolution through natural selection or animal husbandry , the members of a population undergoing artificial evolution modify their form or behavior over many reproductive generations in response to a selective regime. In interactive evolution the selective regime may be applied by the viewer explicitly by selecting individuals which are aesthetically pleasing. Alternatively a selection pressure can be generated implicitly, for example according to the length of time a viewer spends near a piece of evolving art. Equally, evolution may be employed as a mechanism for generating a dynamic world of adaptive individuals, in which the selection pressure is imposed by the program, and the viewer plays no role in selection, as in the Black Shoals project.

How can systems be built with metabolism, heredity, and membranes at the same time? How can adaptation at multiple temporal and spatial scales be achieved? Is there an inherent limitation to computer simulations of open-ended evolution? How to integrate adaptivity and autonomy?
