Child Growth and Development

Child development involves the biological , psychological and emotional changes that occur in human beings between birth and the conclusion of adolescence. Childhood is divided into 3 stages of life include early childhood, middle childhood, and adolescence. During this period, development is significant, as many of life's milestones happen during this time period such as first words, learning to crawl, and learning to walk. There is speculation that middle childhood, or ages 6—13 are the most crucial years of a child's life, ranging from the starts of some sorts of formal schooling to the beginning of puberty, and this is also the period where many children start to gain a more sense of self. Adolescence, is the stage of life that typically starts around the time puberty hits, all the way up until legal adulthood. In the course of development, the individual human progresses from dependency to increasing autonomy. It is a continuous process with a predictable sequence, yet has a unique course for every child.

It is therefore important to understand the impact of these services and to ensure their quality and accessibility. As the labour force participation rates for mothers of young children have risen over the past few decades, so has the use of child care, including both child care centres and family child care homes. A substantial majority of young children now regularly experience child care prior to their entry into school: rates of care for preschool-aged children are now higher than for infants and toddlers. Recent estimates indicate that nearly two-thirds of all 3- to 5-year-old children in the United States attend some form of regular child care prior to kindergarten. Examination of the quality of child care has weighed a variety of factors, including classroom practices eg, materials, activities, daily organization , teacher—child relationships eg, teacher sensitivity, warmth and closeness of the relationship with the child , and teacher qualifications eg, education and training levels. One difficulty with examining the impact of child care quality is the issue of family selection factors. Families choose the child care they use, and families with differing characteristics may choose different types and quality of care.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children, in their Position Statement principles that should guide early childhood professional practice, explain,. Also important for educators to know are the sequences in which children gain specific concepts, skills, and abilities, building on prior development and learning…. Familiarity with known learning sequences should inform curriculum development and teaching practice. Dig a bit deeper, and there are five benefits that child care professionals gain when they take the time and effort to learn about the typical growth and development of children. Knowledge of child development is the first of three types of knowledge child care providers need in their work with children. The other two are: knowledge of individual children; and knowledge of family, community, and culture from which the child comes. Knowing what is typical at a certain age is the best place to start when experiences and environments are planned for that age of children.

All of these areas of development are linked, and each depends on and influences the others. This is the time when the foundations for learning, health and behaviour throughout life are laid down. Babies are born ready to learn, and their brains develop through use. In fact, relationships are the foundation of child development. Through relationships, your child learns vital information about their world. Your child also learns by seeing relationships among other people — for example, by seeing how you behave with other family members. Play is fun for your child.
