In the s, Mies was the last director of the Bauhaus , a ground-breaking school of modern art, design and architecture. He accepted the position to head the architecture school at the Armour Institute of Technology later the Illinois Institute of Technology , in Chicago. Mies sought to establish his own particular architectural style that could represent modern times just as Classical and Gothic did for their own eras. The style he created made a statement with its extreme clarity and simplicity. His mature buildings made use of modern materials such as industrial steel and plate glass to define interior spaces, as also conducted by other modernist architects in the s and s such as Richard Neutra. Mies strove toward an architecture with a minimal framework of structural order balanced against the implied freedom of unobstructed free-flowing open space. He called his buildings "skin and bones" architecture.

It is one of the most notable examples of the functionalist aesthetic and a prominent instance of corporate modern architecture. The building's exterior is formed of a glass curtain wall with vertical mullions of bronze and horizontal spandrels made of Muntz metal. The pink granite plaza facing Park Avenue contains two fountains. Behind the plaza is is a large elevator lobby with a similar design to the plaza. The lowest stories originally contained the Four Seasons and Brasserie restaurants, designed by Philip Johnson , which were subsequently replaced by three other restaurants. The upper stories contain office spaces of modular construction. Plans for the building were announced in July , when Seagram announced it would construct a headquarters on the up-and-coming commercial strip of Park Avenue.

The Barcelona Pavilion, an emblematic work of the Modern Movement, has been exhaustively studied and interpreted as well as having inspired the oeuvre of several generations of architects. Built from glass, steel and different kinds of marble, the Pavilion was conceived to accommodate the official reception presided over by King Alfonso XIII of Spain along with the German authorities. After the closure of the Exhibition, the Pavilion was disassembled in Given the significance and reputation of the Pavilion, thoughts turned towards its possible reconstruction. He believed that architects must completely understand their materials before they can design. It took the Arts and Crafts movement forward in a belief system directly related to the flow of space between inside and outside. In buildings such as the Barcelona pavilion or the Farnsworth house of 20 years later, which has become the iconic Miesian models of such minimalist reduction, this credo is evident at every level; from the way materials are joined, through space planning to furniture design. Over the last twenty years of his life, Mies achieved his vision of a monumental 'skin and bone' architecture.

Historical civilizations are often identified with their surviving architectural achievements. The practice, which began in the prehistoric era , has been used as a way of expressing culture for civilizations on all seven continents. Texts on architecture have been written since ancient time. The earliest surviving text on architectural theory is the 1st century AD treatise De architectura by the Roman architect Vitruvius , according to whom a good building embodies firmitas, utilitas , and venustas durability, utility, and beauty. Centuries later, Leon Battista Alberti developed his ideas further, seeing beauty as an objective quality of buildings to be found in their proportions.
